The Inevitable

The dots of dried-up tears cloud her glasses like the raindrops that cover a car window. She is in the back of the church with her boyfriend and the only thing that can be seen is the casket. This was the family function unlike all the others and it was just a matter of making it through the day. They try to escape the hold of grief by sitting in the back, but how foolish were they to try to escape the inescapable. She and he were never good at things like this. She is pinching herself trying not to break into thousands of pieces and well, he was doing the same. This wasn’t their first rodeo, but somehow that never makes it any better. It was time for them to open the casket and that’s when they went to the car. As they were walking, no words were spoken, but just the silence that was soon filled with wails as the church door closed. They almost made it to the car, but she saw him crumbling into those pieces that were mentioned earlier. She hugs him and now the parking lot is their own personal sanctuary. That day them, and everybody else, held each other a little bit longer than usual.
